I fondly recall my time as the first Minister for Arts,Culture, and theGaeltacht in Ireland, when I reestablished the Irish Film Board under theinspired chair of Lelia Doolan in 1993,and in doing so,made a priority ofsupporting the development of the Irish television, film, and animationindustry. The reasoning behind this decision was clear:To harness the technicalfacilities available in Ireland, and above all,to support the imaginative andcreative skills which existed in abundance but which had been too longunderemployed. Investment in training and in the film and audiovisual sectors wascentral, opening a pathway for a new generation of Irish filmmakers, animators, writers, and technicians to imagine a career in the industry andto contribute to it at the highest level.
