The Album - Shadows of Memory - Stories from the Memory Project

Sep 29, 2026

Holocaust Museum Houston presents eight Holocaust survivors’ personal recollections recorded beginning in September 2004, shaped through writing workshops and monthly meetings for discussion and revision. The volume is titled to reflect what it contains: not an historical record, but shadowed memories—intimate, firsthand reflections that convey emotions, experiences, and how the Holocaust changed lives. The director frames the project as an effort to commemorate those who perished, honor survivors, and ensure the world remembers and prevents such evil again.

FAQs

What prompted the Memory Project in 2004?

In September 2004, Holocaust survivors began a project to record their memories in their own words. The work grew from writing workshops supported by a United States Holocaust Memorial Museum grant awarded to Holocaust Museum Houston.

How did the writing workshop process work?

Participants met monthly to discuss pieces they had written and to share suggestions for improvements. Some works were so compelling that the group listened without comment, and by May each writer had created a substantial body of material.

What does the book emphasize instead of being an historical record?

The collection is described as shadowed memories—personal recollections meant to be totally accurate in their own sense, but not intended as an historical record. Readers gain a profoundly personal glimpse into eight survivors’ lives.
