Ten Myths About Israel challenges widely repeated narratives behind the Israel–Palestine conflict by confronting ten foundational “myths” with historical research. The book argues that distortions of past events shape present politics, enabling oppression and sustaining colonization and occupation. Organized chronologically, it addresses claims about Palestine before Zionism, the relationship between Jews and land, Zionism’s supposed non-colonial nature, and widely held political myths about democracy, Oslo, Gaza, and the two-states solution.

LOOKING AHEAD 10. 􀀊e Two-States Solution Is the Only Way Forward Conclusion: 􀀊e Se)ler Colonial State of Israel in the Twenty First Century Timeline Notes Index Preface History lies at the core of every con􀀛ict. A true and unbiased understanding of the past offers the possibility of peace. 􀀊e distortion or manipulation of history, in contrast, will only sow disaster. As the example of the Israel–Palestine con􀀛ict shows, historical disinformation, even of the mostrecent past, can do tremendous harm. 􀀊is willful misunderstanding of history can promote oppression and protect a regime of colonization and occupation. It is not surprising, therefore, that policies of disinformation and distortion continue to the present and play an important part in perpetuating the con􀀛ict, leaving very li)le hope for the future. Constructed fallacies about the past and the present in Israel and Palestine hinder us from understanding the origins of the con􀀛ict. Meanwhile, the constant manipulation of the relevant facts works against the interests of all those victimized by the ongoing bloodshed and violence. What is to be done? 􀀊e Zionist historical account of how the disputed land became the state of Israel is based on a cluster of myths that subtly cast doubt on the Palestinians’ moral right to the land. O􀀜en, the Western mainstream media and political elites accept this set of myths as a given truth, as well as the justi􀀘cation for Israeli actions across the last sixty or so years. More o􀀜en than not, the tacit acceptance of these myths serves as an explanation for Western governments’ disinclination to interfere in any meaningful way in a con􀀛ict that has been going on since the nation’s foundation. 􀀊is book challenges these myths, which appear in the public domain as indisputable truths. 􀀊ese statements are, to my eyes, distortions and fabrications that canãand mustãbe refuted through a closer examination of the historical record. 􀀊e common thread that runs through this book is the juxtaposition of popular assumption and historical reality. By placing each myth side by side with the truth, each chapter exposes the weaknesses of the received wisdom through an examination of the latest historical research. 􀀊e book covers ten foundational myths

What is the main purpose of Ten Myths About Israel?

It challenges ten widely accepted myths about Israel and the Palestinians by testing them against the historical record and latest historical research to show how distorted narratives can fuel conflict and justify policies.

How is the book structured across the ten myths?

The myths and counter-arguments follow a chronological order, moving from narratives about Palestine before Zionism, to claims about the present, and then to forward-looking arguments about solutions.

Which historical issues does the book address in its early chapters?

It examines claims that Palestine was an empty land, that Jews were a people without a land, and questions the genealogical and political premises used to justify “return” and early Zionist settlement.
