Studying them in their natural habitat was a challenge for scientists. In the early 20th century, most information about whales came from whaling operations. This began to change in the 1960s, when biologists developed non-invasive methods, such as tracking migrations and recording whale songs. These breakthroughs allowed researchers to learn more about whales without harming them. The new methods of studying whales revolutionized marine biology.
