Swahili Time explains how the 24-hour day is labeled using AM and PM in the United States, then contrasts it with a different local approach in Tanzania. Through Jessica’s conversations with Juma, the text shows how breakfast, classes, breaks, and lunch map to “Swahili time” by shifting the clock by a 6-hour difference anchored to sunrise. It demonstrates when subtraction fails due to negative results and confirms addition as the correct method for accurate local time.

In America, we divide the 24-hour day into two 12-hour blocks . The first 12-hour block starts at midnight and we label AM after the time . For example, if it is 3 hours past midnight (when we should all be sleeping soundly), we would write 3 AM. The second 12-hour block starts at noon and we write it with PM. So, if it is 4 hours past noon, we would write 4 PM, which is about the time I get out of school and can play with my friends . When my family moved to Tanzania, I met Juma who told me that Tanzanians tell time differently. When I eat breakfast at 7 AM in the morning, Juma says that it’s 1 in the morning to him . “You see, Jessica. Like you, we Tanzanians break the 24-hour day into two 12-hour periods . But, we Tanzanians start telling time from sunrise, which is 6 AM your time . At sunrise, we can see daylight, so it makes sense for us to start there . " I told Juma that my first class at school starts at 8 AM, and he says that is 2 in the morning for him . At 10:45 AM, I have a morning break where I can geta snack. That’s 4:45 in the morning for Juma. When I eat lunch, it’s 1 PM to me and 7 in the afternoon to Juma. I wonder if there is a way for me to convert my time to the local time in Tanzania. I think back to our time difference . If I eat breakfast at 7 AM, that’s 1 in the morning Swahili time . I notice that there is a time difference of 6 hours . My class starts at 8 AM, which is 2 in the morning Swahili time . That’s also a difference of 6 hours . I wonder if I were to subtract 6 hours from my time, I would get the local Swahili time . When I eat lunch, it’s 1 PM. But if I subtract 6 hours from 1 PM, I will get a negative number, so that doesn’t work. 1-6 = -5 Hmm? Juma says it should be 7 in the afternoon. However, I noticed that I can add 6 hours to 1 PM to get 7 in the afternoon local time . 1 + 6 = 7 That is correct! So now I think that to change the 12-hour clock to Swahili time, I can either add or subtract 6. I told Juma that I get home from school at 4 PM. So if I add 6 to 4 PM, I get 10 in the afternoon. But if I subtract 6 from 4 PM, I get a negative number . So I think adding 6 is correct, so the Swahili time for 4 PM is 10 in the afternoon.

FAQs

How does Jessica’s family divide the day in America?

In America, Jessica explains that the 24-hour day is split into two 12-hour blocks. The first starts at midnight and uses AM, and the second starts at noon and uses PM.

How do Tanzanians start telling time differently?

Juma says Tanzanians begin counting time from sunrise, which is 6 AM in Jessica’s time. Because sunrise has visible daylight, it makes sense for their starting point.

What method does Jessica use to convert between American time and Swahili time?

Jessica first calculates a 6-hour time difference. She learns that subtracting 6 can create negative numbers, so she instead adds 6 to the correct PM time to reach the local Swahili time.
