Long associated in Thailand with affordable, everyday food across the provinces, the mackerel carries a history of necessity and subsistence . Yet this work is not simply about fish. Moving in schools, living in constant motion, and ultimately ending in consumption, the Thai mackerel reflects a cycle in which life is shaped by external demands . Even its body is modified to meet the expectations of the market. Through this lens, Survival of the Fishes asks a wider question: when life is organised for use, exchange, and display, are we truly surviving or are we also being consumed in another form? He graduated from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University, where early material experimentation informed his evolving practice. A pivotal moment occurred in 2012 during a mural commission at Wat Nong Song Phi Nong in Ubon Ratchathani, when he encountered the banana plant as a deeply embedded cultural object—woven into food, craft, rituals, and everyday language. This experience became the foundation of his ongoing inquiry into the banana as both form and metaphor. In SZACK’s work, the banana signifies the tension between surface and interior, image and essence—reflecting how social expectations often compel individuals to prioritize appearance over inner truth. Frequently depicted partially peeled, the banana becomes an allegory of selfhood and value: despite changing external layers, what remains within persists intact. Shaped by pop sensibility and intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, SZACK’s playful yet serious visual language invites audiences through humor while pointing toward deeper psychological and social realities—suggesting that value is not granted externally, but reclaimed from within.
