Survival Camp

Sep 21, 2026

A group of 24 campers—16 boys and 8 girls—are dropped in the scrubby Utah desert for a wilderness survival program. Mimi, forced by her parents to attend, arrives resentful and skeptical, recalling past family arguments and strict rules. During the orientation, counselors distribute limited rations and explain the desert’s potential food sources. As hiking begins, Mimi notices one counselor, Brad Taylor, assessing the campers, and hopes he may influence how she is treated.

Mimi looked around at the other campers. There were 24 of them altogether,16 boysand 8 girls. It was a ratio she would haveliked any other time, any other place.Butnothing looked good here. Survival Camp! How in the world did sheget stuck with this?Because her parents hadsent her, that was why. "Have you been to one of these campsbefore?"the boy standing next to her asked. He had red hair, freckles, and a friendlygrin. "No,”Mimi said."Have you?" His grin widened."Yeah.Last year.I likeadventure.By the way,my name is Red.” "I’m Mimi. You must have liked it then.Camp,I mean." "I sure did.But then I'’m weird. You'lfind out." Great,Mimi thought. The resentmentthat had been simmering in her boiled upand over. Why had her parents done thisawful thing to her?Their reasoning wasall fouled up.Just because last year herbrother Dave had had car trouble in thedesert and had had to walk out. Mimi's mother wept."If that had beenyou,Mimi, you'd be dead." Dave had smiled through cracked lips.“Our Mimi would still be sitting there, waiting for someone to carry her home.” "I would not either,"Mimi had saidindignantly."Besides,I’m not going to betaking any dumb desert trips." She couldn't believe it when her fatherhad produced the Survival Camp bookletthree days later "Don't you think this is going a bit far?"she'd asked."Look,we live in San Francisco.I'll never need to camp out on Market Street. And there are plenty of coffee shopsaround.I'll never have to live off the land onVan Ness Avenue."Her sarcasm had goneright over their heads. "Your mother and I have talked about it,"her dad had said."There are things aboutyou..."He'd stopped, and Mimi had seenthe looks her parents had exchanged. Her throat had suddenly felt dry.Did herdad know about the algebra test?Had Mr.Sommers told after all? He'd promised notto if she'd promise not to cheat again. "You give up too easily,"her dad had goneon."Unless something is handed to you on aplate, you don't even want it." "She never has any trouble getting stuffhanded to her,"Dave had butted in."AllMimi has to do is bat her eyelashes andshow her dimples.I swear,if a shark attacked her,Mimi would try making up tohim before she tried swimming." "Why don't you clam up?"Mimi had said. "We didn't ask for your opinion,Dave,"their dad had said."Nevertheless."He hadplunked the ad for the Survival Camp downin front of Mimi."We've registered you forthe June session." Mimi had read aloud."The wildernessvalues are the true values.Sleeping underthe stars.Learning the meaning of independence and self-worth."She'd rolledher eyes in despair."You've got tobe kidding." But they hadn't been kidding, and now shewas here. She'd known it would be nauseating, and it looked as if she'd beenright. One of the three camp counselors
