PART ONE

A S O NI C K E T T # SUPERPEARLY JASON FICKETT To Scarlet and Walt PART ONE 1 I've always hated school.Even in kindergarten,Ihated it.What kind of place doesn't even let youtake a break for lunch? You'd think lunch would bethe one time you could take a break from having tofreak out about all the rules. But,nope, not if youwent where I went for kindergarten.I called itHades—Hades Primary Academy.Everyone elsecalled it Hayes. When you ate lunch in Hades, you wereonly allowed to talk in a“whisper-voice,”and onceyou were done eating, you were supposed to putyour head down on the table and not make a singlesound. They turned out the lights once everyonewas supposed to be done, and if you made a singlesound after that, this terrifying lunch lady wouldmarch over and shout right in your face,"Go standagainst the wall!” I had nightmares about that lady. Her hairwas huge—a huge rat's nest.I had a dream that herhair grew up through the carpet in my bedroomand filled the whole room, all the way up to theceiling.Somehow, she was under the carpet, yelling at me,and I was trying to get out of my room, but I kept getting lost in her hair, and it wastrying to pull me down under the carpet with her. I made the mistake of letting my guarddown at lunch one time.It never happened again.Inever let my guard down at school again, and itkind of wore me down.I was done eating, and Ihad my head down on the lunch table.I was sittingacross from my friend Julia.Since there was abso-lutely nothing to do,I was making a little pretendhorse with my fingers and having it walk acrossthe table and eat some grass.Julia started doing ittoo, and our horses were hanging out together andrunning around, and the next thing I knew,I heardit.I heard those words like somebody stabbed mein the gut and twisted the knife,“Go stand againstthe wall!” I looked over at the lunch lady, and she wasstaring right at me.Her face was raging, and herbig hair was literally shaking. I didn't think I'd made a sound-unless myfingers made a sound on the table when my littlehorse guy was running,or maybe I made a whisperto Julia and I didn't even know it,but I didn'tthink so.I looked behind me,praying she wasabout to kill somebody else. She shouted it again,“Go stand against thewall!”And she started rumbling right towards me.I almost peed my pants.I'd been holding it all
