Krogman KONAN, THORDRIN, AND LYRA leave Tahayi Mines in flames and flee northward, praying there might be life beyond the waste. Somewhere past the sands, freedom awaits. However, the sands do not end, and they fall to the blazing heat. Rescued by the Manalal, a fearsome desert clan, they are dragged into a war to secure safe passage. Finally, they succeed, with both Konan and Lyra discovering the incredible depth of their powers. Lyra, a talented Air mage, can summon sandstorms and Whisper across continents, and Konan can manipulate Water enough to sustain or parch entire lands. But none of that power can save them from tragedy. Upon reaching the coast, they encounter the remains of Lyra’s caravan. Her entire family—mother, brother, cousins—is dead. Devastated by her loss, Lyra crumbles. Amidst rumors of an insidious madness infecting the ports from Krita, they agree to cross the ocean together, but Lyra destroys the ship halfway across. Beneath the sea, Taiuki, the Second of the myrkingdom of Shiggo, fights her own lonely battle, striving for acknowledgment and self-determination. Her military rank stripped and her life promised to a human prince, she is lost until she finds a baby Water dragon. It’tholl. But even the Bond cannot heal the hurts at home, and Taiuki must face war with the neighboring myrkingdom while training her baby brother Tan to lead. Despite her attempts at secrecy, Taiuki fails to keep the dragons from Tan, just as she fails to protect her war mount from near-lethal injury.
