Guidance on effective studying across different courses, emphasizing that no single perfect method exists and that learners must adapt through trial-and-error. The content explains a study process divided into five cyclical phases—exploring, processing, expanding, mastering, and showing—while noting that learners may need to revisit earlier steps. It offers concrete actions for exploring course material, selecting sources, planning time, handling unclear expectations, evaluating efficiency, and applying processing techniques such as understanding and structuring with signal words.

Study skills from A to Z The perfect study method does not exist. There is no single method that guarantees success for everyone and for every course. The search for a good study method will therefore be a process of trialand-error. Moreover, you will have to be flexible, because you will not be able to tackle every course in the same way. You will be challenged to let go of your familiar study method and try a different approach. Below you will find a number of tips, guidelines and pitfalls that you can take into account while studying. The key message remains: find out what works for you! 1. Studying in different phases | The study process can be divided into five phases: exploring, processing, expanding, mastering and showing. These phases are presented as a cyclical process, but in practice, it will not be so straightforward. While studying you will sometimes notice that it is necessary to go back to a previous step before you can continue to the next one. So it will rather be a continuous process in which you will repeatedly go through the steps in order to get a grip on the subject matter.
In a good study method, each of these phases are covered to a varying degree. So before you continue, take a minute to think about your own study method: What do you currently do? Do you recognise each phase in your current approach? Do you skip steps or do you only focus on one or two of them? Evaluate yourself! | | | --- | --- | 1.1. Exploring Before you start working on your course material, it is a good idea to first explore the course. The goal of this step is to get an overall picture of what the course entails. You can ask yourself the following questions: - Which place does this course have within the study program? - What are the objectives of the course? - What will the exam look like? Will there be any other evaluation moments? - What will the lecturer expect at the exam? - Do you have any prior knowledge about this subject? - What study material do you have at your disposal? Do you have everything you need? You should be able to find all information about the necessary study materials and the exam online. Be sure to have a look at announcements on Toledo, the slides of the first lecture and the ECTS course description. The latter can be found in the program guide. Exploring the study material can help you to determine your plan of action when studying. You can go through a few steps to do so. |
Determine your plan of action | | | --- | ---
| What study material do you have?
-Textbook
-Powerpoint presentations
-Own notes
-Material from practical sessions
-Extra information on Toledo
-Weblectures
-Exam questions
-Exercises (with solutions)
| Choose one or two sources that will guide you. Focus on those and use the other material as background information or illustration, to study more in depth or when revising. If necessary, you can write down the most important information from the additional sources in the main source.
Take this into account:
-The (amount of) subject matter
-The structure of the lectures
-The form and expectations of the exam
-The available time
-Your optimal study method | | | If something is unclear, talk to someone about it. If the expectations are not clear, you can check this with the professor.
Evaluate yourself while studying. Is this a good approach? Are you at risk of missing important information? Are you studying in an efficient way? Be critical, but don’t constantly change your strategy. | You can also take some time to explore your textbook. A handy tool for this is the table of contents. It gives you an overview of the topics that will be covered and can help you orientate within the subject matter. If there is no table of contents, it is a good idea to make one yourself. It is up to you how detailed you make that table of contents. You can also explore your textbook by reading introductor
