FAQs

What basic tools are recommended to start stenciling?

Use stencils, artist’s/drafting tape or stencil adhesive spray, pencil or chalk pencil, a clear plastic ruler and measuring tape, fine-point permanent marker, scissors, and practice materials. Acrylic spray sealer is used to protect the finished surface.

How should wood surfaces be prepared before stenciling?

Apply wood filler/putty and let it set, then use a water-based primer. Sand with medium, fine, and extra-fine grit materials, and finish with an extra-fine wood finishing pad or synthetic steel wool, followed by tack cloth or a damp paper towel.

What cleanup items help maintain stencils and brushes?

Clean stencils with baby oil or rubbing alcohol, and use baby wipes for general cleaning. For brushes, use brush cleaner and a brush scrubber or plastic kitchen scrubber, then dry with paper towels or facial tissues to correct mistakes.
