STATEWIDE ASSESSMENT OF WRITING - TME Report 87 - April 1985

Sep 15, 2026

This paper examines the status of writing assessment as implemented across the United States. All fifty states and the District of Columbia responded to a survey about state testing programs, allowing comparison of practices at various grade levels. Findings cover where statewide writing assessment is established and where procedures are under development, including differences in test purpose and tested populations. Results inform remediation needs, minimum competency and graduation requirements, and improvements to curriculum and instruction, with a state-by-state appendix of survey outcomes.
