STAR Assessment Frequently Asked Questions explain that all STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs) that adjust item difficulty based on a student’s previous responses, increasing difficulty after correct answers and decreasing it after missed items. The FAQs cover typical completion times for STAR Math, STAR Reading, and STAR Early Literacy, plus how results are used to screen achievement levels, monitor literacy growth, and support placement into instructional programs. It also clarifies scaled scores, criterion- and norm-referenced reporting, potential reasons for lower-than-expected scores, and defines key terms such as IRL, PR, SS, and ZPD.

STAR Assessment Frequently Asked Questions What are computer-adaptive tests? All STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs) . Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty level of the next item is increased. If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. CATs save testing time and spare your child the frustration of items that are too difficult and the boredom of items that are too easy. How long does it take to complete a STAR assessment? STAR tests are designed to be as efficient as possible. On average, students will complete the STAR Math test in about 20 minutes, the STAR Reading test in about 15 minutes, the STAR Early Literacy test in 15–20 minutes, and the STAR Reading Spanish test in about 10 minutes. However, some students may require more time. What are STAR assessments used for? The STAR assessments are often used to screen students for their reading and math achievement levels. STAR Reading and STAR Math™ assessments help determine reading and math achievement levels in order to place students into the Accelerated Reader™ and Accelerated Math™ programs. STAR Early Literacy assessments help educators monitor students’ growing literacy skills and students’ progress toward becoming independent readers. STAR™ assessments can also be used to monitor student growth throughout the year and to estimate students’ understanding of state standards. In addition, STAR can help teachers determine appropriate instructional levels and skills that students are ready to learn. How can I help my child prepare for a STAR assessment? The teacher who gives the test uses pre-test instructions to explain the test to your child. It is important for you to encourage your child to try to do his or her best on the assessment. Since STAR is a general measure of student ability in math or reading, students perform best on the assessment in the same way they perform best in school—when they have had plenty of rest, attend school regularly, and have eaten. What kind of score does my child get? For every STAR assessment, your child receives a scaled score (SS), which is based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct answers. Scaled scores are useful for comparing your child’s performance over time and across grades. STAR Reading and STAR Math scaled scores range from 0– 1400. STAR Early Literacy scaled scores range from 300–900. STAR offers educators a variety of scoresand reports. Some STAR scores compare your child’s performance to specific criteria or to a standard (criterion-referenced scores) . STAR reports also include scores which compare your child’s performance to other students who have taken the same test (norm-referenced scores) . The criterion-and normreferenced scores are based on the scaled score. Why are my student’s STAR scores lower than anticipated? Most questions surrounding an unexpected test score can be answered by looking at the fidelity of test administration and the student’s mindset at the time of the test. Some circumstances that can affect the scores are how long the student took to complete the test, the students frame of mind during the test, a change in testing conditions from previous test events, and the gap of in-person learning as a results of schools moving to remote learning due to COVID-19. Definitions of Terms within the STAR Report Instructional Reading Level (IRL) is calculated after a student completes a Star Reading test; it is a criterion-referenced score that is the highest reading level at which a student is 80% proficient (or higher) at comprehending material with assistance. Research has found that this level of comprehension corresponds to being at least 90–98% proficient at recognizing words; Star Reading does not directly assess word recognition. Percentile Rank

FAQs

What are computer-adaptive tests in STAR assessments?

All STAR assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs). The test continually adjusts the difficulty of each question based on the student’s previous responses.

How long does it take to complete a STAR assessment?

On average, students complete STAR Math in about 20 minutes and STAR Reading in about 15 minutes. STAR Early Literacy typically takes 15–20 minutes, and STAR Reading Spanish about 10 minutes, though some students need more time.

How are scaled scores and other STAR scores used?

Students receive a scaled score (SS) based on question difficulty and the number of correct answers. Criterion-referenced scores compare performance to criteria or standards, while norm-referenced scores compare performance with other students; both are derived from the scaled score.
