European patent specification for a stable emulsion formulated to prevent skin irritation, particularly diaper rash. The formulation combines a gum blend with an electrolyte-tolerant polymer to improve physical stability of emulsions containing clay and silicone oil, enabling application to skin via wipes. The disclosure addresses limitations of prior silicone-oil emulsions, including high emulsifier cost, difficulty achieving low-viscosity sprayable solutions, and phase separation after freeze-thaw cycles.

The entirety of Application No. 61/666407 is incorporated herein by reference. BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE [0002] The present disclosure relates generally to a formulation in the form of an emulsion which includes a combination of a gum blend and an electrolyte tolerant polymer, and items using same. The gum blend provides physical stability to an emulsion containing both clay and silicone oil. The emulsion of the present disclosure is useful for rash prevention and may be applied to the skin with a wipe wetted therewith or by other various means. [0003] Wet wipes have been used for years for convenient skin cleansing between diaper changes. Much headway has been made in creating formulations for wet wipes. Such formulations are in the form of emulsions which provide a vehicle for the application of active ingredients to the skin. These ingredients may be used to treat and/or prevent diaper rash. [0004] Diaper rash is a form of contact dermatitis which afflicts infants or incontinent persons whose wet and/or soiled absorbent garments are not promptly changed. Because of the practical impossibility of attending promptly to all of a person’s needs, even those receiving a high level of care sometimes suffer from diaper rash. It has recently come to be understood that the initial stages of some types of diaper rash are the result of skin irritation caused by contact with digestive enzymes present in feces, particularly trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase. These enzymes are proteolytic enzymes produced in the gastrointestinal tract to digest food. Similar conditions conducive to skin irr

FAQs

What condition is the stable emulsion intended to prevent?

The disclosure focuses on preventing rash, particularly diaper rash, by protecting skin from irritation.

Which ingredients are central to the emulsion formulation?

The emulsion includes a gum blend and an electrolyte tolerant polymer, and it is designed to work with clay and silicone oil.

Why are previous silicone-oil emulsion approaches considered insufficient?

They may require costly emulsifiers, can be hard to make low-viscosity and sprayable, and may undergo phase separation, especially after freeze-thaw cycles.
