Spots of Time serves as the poignant autobiography of Professor Basil Willey, documenting his formative years from his birth in 1897 through the conclusion of World War I in 1920. Far from a standard chronological account of outward events, the narrative focuses on the internal life and evolving consciousness of a scholar navigating a rapidly changing century. Willey examines how the traditional patterns of life, established during the Victorian era, were dismantled and reconstructed by the seismic shifts of the Great War and subsequent social analysis. By identifying those significant, intense moments of personal reflection—or "spots of time"—the author provides a rich, humorous, and deeply moving inquiry into the nature of identity. The work reflects on the challenges of intellectual and ethical life in an age where fundamental assumptions are constantly questioned, offering readers a profound look at a life lived with intellectual rigor and intense self-awareness during one of history's most transformative periods.
