Oct 13, 2026

Southern Writers in the Modern World presents Donald Davidson’s inaugural lectures on the Fugitive and Agrarian movements. It examines the underlying aims of these Southern literary and cultural concerns, formed amid growing national materialism and its impact on the South. The discussion also addresses the modern university’s relationship to the writer, questioning whether the writer needs the university and how the institution views literary authorship. Delivered at Mercer University as part of the 1957 Lamar Memorial Lectures.
