Control and Utility Spells

Sorcerer spells in Dungeons & Dragons 5e offer a wide range of abilities, including high damage output, control effects, and utility. While Sorcerers share spell slot scaling with Wizards, they have fewer access to spells at any given time. As such, they must be strategic in selecting the most useful spells for common situations. DnD 5e's Sorcerers also gain access to metamagic, allowing them to modify their spells and make certain effects more attractive. Here are my picks for the best Sorcerer cantrips by level: At Level 1, Fire Bolt is an excellent choice, dealing 1d10 fire damage on a 120-foot ranged attack. It can also ignite flammable objects, making it a versatile spell for combat and utility. Mind Sliver stands out as the highest chance of hitting any available cantrip, with a 1d6 psychic damage output and reduced target's next saving throw by 1d4 . Its effectiveness is amplified when paired with Quickened Spell or Heightened Spell metamagic. Mage Hand is an incredibly useful spell for interacting with objects at a distance, making it atop choice for utility. It offers versatility in various scenarios and provides a practical solution for everyday problems. Minor Illusion creates a 1-minute illusory image or sound, providing numerous opportunities for creative applications such as setting up ambushes, distractions, or diversions. Its 1001 uses make it an indispensable spell in Sorcerers'toolkits. Ray of Frost deals 1d8 frost damage on a 60-foot ranged attack and slows the target's movement speed by 10 feet for one round. While not as high-rated as other cantrips, its value lies in its suitability for ranged-heavy parties using hit-and-run tactics to evade attacks. If your party is heavily dependent on melee characters, consider incorporating Sorcerer cantrips that offer utility and protection. Here are my ratings for each: - **Shield**: A 1st-level Sorcerer spell that grants +5 AC until the start of your next turn, used as a reaction to taking damage. It also prevents Magic Missile from hitting, turning an enemy hit into a miss and protecting you against other attacks. - **Fog Cloud**: Creates a 20-foot radius of fog that heavily obscures the area, making it ideal for ranged attackers in your party. This spell allows you to move in and out of the cloud, targeting enemies with disadvantage or avoiding opportunity attacks. - **Catapult**: Launches an object 90 feet in a straight line, forcing creatures to make a Dexterity saving throw if they'd hit. If successful, the object keeps flying, possibly hitting another creature directly in line with them. - **Magic Missile**: Sends out three darts that deal force damage to between 1-3 targets. Magic Missiles automatically hit and deal relatively low damage but are guaranteed to hit, making them an excellent tool for breaking enemy spellcasters' concentration. - **Mage Armor**: Changes a target's base AC to 13 + Dexterity modifier for 8 hours without concentration. This spell provides a significant +3 AC bonus for the entire adventuring day, bringing your chance to be hit down by 15 percentage points. Mage Armor is a useful 1st-level spell for Sorcerers that provides an AC boost without using up any spell slots. It's especially helpful when paired with other spells or abilities that require concentration, allowing the caster to rest while still benefiting from its effects. Some DMs might not allow for "rest casting" and view it as cheesy, but Mage Armor remains a valuable tool in a Sorcerer's arsenal. For Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers, however, Mage Armor is less effective due to their existing AC bonus. Web, on the other hand, is considered the premier 2nd-level control spell in DnD 5e. It creates difficult terrain and forces creatures to make a Dexterity saving throw upon entry or at the start of their turn within its area. If they fail, they become restrained until they take an action to succeed with a Strength check against the caster's spell save DC. This can greatly aid
