Again A Note from Stella Also by Stella About Stella Rowe [OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) Late I SWEPT INTO THE dining room forty minutes late, my Louboutins clicking against the polished wood floors. The coastal lodge was trying so hard to be rustic-chic with its exposed beams and ocean views. Quaint. Everyone turned to look at me. I noted the Cartier watch on the wrist of an older woman near the door, the poorly tailored suit on the man beside her. The room was a mix of money and middle class. My gaze locked on Fiona at the head table, her honey-blonde waves catching the light as she leaned in close to Robin. They were laughing about something, their heads nearly touching. My sister and her best friend, thick as thieves. A familiar knot tightened in my stomach. That should have been my seat. Fiona finally noticed me. Her smile faltered, then brightened with what looked like relief. Too little, too late. I navigated between tables, nodding at faces I barely remembered from childhood. When I reached the head table, I discovered my assigned seat was next to Tom, my future brother-in-law. Directly across from Robin, who occupied the maid of honor position beside my sister. Of course. Perfect Robin got the place of honor while I was exiled across the table. "Penelope, you made it," Fiona said, her voice tight with forced cheer. I slid into my chair and caught a server's eye. "Gin martini, very dry," I said, arranging my features into what I hoped passed for pleasantly neutral. A few minutes passed before someone down the table clinked a glass."Speech!" Robin stood, smoothing out her billowing green midi dress as she moved. Because if you run a yoga studio, you have to dress like a certified earth mama, I guess. The hammered silver necklace at her throat looked handmade—probably from some local artisan she loved to support. When she lifted her glass, an oversized statement ring caught the light. Chunky silver, vaguely spiritual. Of course, how bohemian of her. "I've known Fiona since we were eleven," she began, her voice warm with practiced sincerity. "We shared our first day of middle school together, terrified and clutching our matching pencil cases." The crowd chuckled. I took a long sip of my martini. "And now here she is, marrying the most wonderful man, who appreciates her exactly as she deserves." Robin turned to Tom. "I knew you were the one for her when you showed up to every single one of her school concerts, even when you had your own baseball team to coach the next morning." Fiona wiped a tear from her cheek. Tom squeezed her hand. "What makes Fiona and Tom so special is how they've built not just a relationship, but a community. Their classroom doors are always open to students who need extra help. Their home is always open to friends who need a place to gather." Robin paused, her gaze sweeping across the room before landing directly on me. "Because that's what love is, isn't it? It's about the people who show up. Who stay. Who choose to be present for the ones they love, no matter what." The room burst into applause. Several guests dabbed at their eyes with napkins. I knew exactly what she meant. Eigh
