There are many reasons to keep guinea pigs: • They are small animals that are herbivorous (live only on vegetables and green leaves) . • They are easy to raise • They are timid and do not try to run away. • The meat is tasty and high in protein. • Because of their size (usually 0.5-1.5kg) they can easily be eaten by a family in one meal. • The fur is very good and can often be sold. All of this makes them suitable for households and small livestock farming. There are about 22 million guinea pigs in Peru. Many people like to eat them and they apparently taste like chicken; they are also eaten by the highland people of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador and in some African countries. Most people who raise guinea pigs do so for food, or to exchange for other food, such as rice. In South America some people are learning to breed much larger guinea pigs which grow rapidly. Traditional production Many people allow guinea pigs to run freely around the cooking hut. Others build a small pen of adobe (mud) bricks, under the cooking stove, since guinea pigs like to keep warm. This method works because: • Guinea pigs do not climb so they are easy to keep in such pens. • They are protected from dogs, rats, foxes and cats, all of which will eat guinea pigs. But there are also some disadvantages: • Breeding cannot be planned, so there may not be very many guinea pigs for meat. • Disease can also be a problem as such pens are not easy to clean. • Pregnant guinea pigs are often picked for cooking because of their large size.
