If there is a germinal issue at the core of much theological reflection onthe part of Catholics in the post-Vatican II era,it is the complexity ofthe relationship between the sacred and the secular.Catholics now livemore comfortably than ever before with the realization that the realm ofgrace is not foreign to that of nature.God's gracious love-intention per-meates the entire creation,so that the very life of faith itself is propor-tionately enlightened and made more poignant as believers come intocontact with the often obscure, yet effective presence of Gods grace inthe world.Yet this insight,as valid and as necessary as it is for allChristians, has caused painful difficulties as well as new opportunitiesfor religious communities of the Catholic Church. ## SOME QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS Vocations are on the decline;why become a religious when the lifeof grace pervades every Christian as well as every secular vocation?Vowsare no longer patently intelligible;why poverty, chastity and obediencewhen marriage vows and responsibilities or temporary promises to workin Appalachia or to serve in local social agencies and
