Woman in the Image and Glory of God DR.J.MASSINGBERD FORD Pope Paul VI in his opening allocution at the second session of theSecond Vatican Council spoke of the Church as a"reality imbuedwith the hidden presence of God."He then added:"It lies, therefore, within the very nature of the Church to be always open to new andgreater exploration."2 Perhaps there is no area in which "new and greater exploration"is needed than with regard to the theology of woman and her placein liturgical life which affects not only half the human race but alsothe male population which might benefit greatly from her services. This essay will attempt to place woman in her place in the contextof redemption history and also to describe her role in the dispensationof the graces of salvation, especially with regard to the liturgy. # WOMAN AND THE IMAGE OF GOD It is not often remarked that in the first account of creation inGenesis it is only when man and woman are together that they aresaid to be in the image and likeness of God:"So God created manin his own image,in the image of God he created him;male andfemale he created them”(Gen.1:27).In the second account ofcreation(Genesis 2)where man is created before woman there is noreference whatsoever to the"image and likeness of God."This hasnot been overlooked by ancient Jewish commentators,as the Zohar³perspicaciously observes: 1 This article is not intended to be a historical consideration of the placeof woman in liturgical_worship.Readers are referred to the excellenthistorical summaries by Père Jean Danielou,S.J.,"The Ministry of Womenin the Early Church,"translated by Rt.Rev.Glyn Simon,Faith Press,London,1963,in Maison-Dieu,No.61,1960,and Charles R.Meyer,“Ordained Womenin the Early Church,"Chicago Studies,Archdiocese Review,4(1965),pp.285-308. 2Quotations from the Documents of Vatican Council II are taken fromThe Documents of Vatican II,edited by Walter M.Abbott,SJ.,and JosephGallagher,New York,Guild Press,1966.The quotation is taken from theDogmatic Constitution on the Church,p.14,note 1. 3 The Zohar, translated by Harry Sperling,Maurice Simon and Paul P.Levertoff,5 volumes,London,Soncino Press,1933.This quotation is fromVol.I,p.56. Let us make man in our image, after our likeness;that is,let usmake man,as a compound being, including the male and thefemale,in our image,to wit,the rich;after our likeness,to wit,the poor. For the rich are from the male side and the poor fromthe female. For as the male and the female act in cooperationshowing compassion to each other and mutually exchanging benefitsand kindnesses,so must
