DISCOURSE TO SISTERS—February 11,1961 John Baptist Cardinal MontiniArchbishop of Milan(Now PoPE PAUL VI) the sepulchre of Christ in order to pay Him the truetribute of the dead, the balsam and the perfume, they trembled with amazement and joy in admira-tion over this greatest of miracles:that of the Resur-rection;and they ran down the paths, those pathswhich would become indeed the streets of the wholeworld,to announce the Resurrection of Christ.Wesee them around Our Lady in the Cenacle, and wefind them again according to the Acts of the Apos-tles,at the side of the Apostles, themselves, inorder to help them and to serve them, and to extend, propagate and complete their preaching and theirmission. The following article is a translation of an address given by His Holi-ness,Popc Paul VI,when he was Archbishop of Milan. The English textwas prepared by Sister Marie Valentine,D.J.M.,now studying in the Theology Department of Marquette University,Milwaukee,Wisc. The addressis reprinted through arrangements with the Uficio Studi Arcivescovile diMilano and with the Geoffrey Chapman publishing house of London, forrights to the English translation. It is easy to anticipate the welcome Sisters in the United States willgive to this beautiful address which takes its place in the rich body of teach-ings and writings of Cardinal Montini, now Pope Paul V1.It was original-ly given,February 11,1961,to the women religious of the Archdiocese ofMilan. To you,my dearest daughters,greetings.Greet-ings to you, followers of Christ. In saying this, therecomes to my mind the evangelical figures who havegone before you in your vocation;and I see immedi-ately,in the scenes from the Gospel, those first silentfollowers who accompanied our Lord in His apostolicjourneys.“They followed Him,they ministered toHim,and they helped Him by means of alms." The Lord spoke with a voice at once mys-terious,sweet,insistent,and overpoweringto your heart. And your prompt response:“Yes,I come,OLord” My memory turns also to the names of thesepious women who followed in the footsteps of theLord and of the Apostles, and who form,in a pru-dent,pious,beautiful and edifying manner, the veryfoundation of the evangelical scenes. You are the successors of that first generation ofthe followers of Christ. You continue their work, and you desire truly to be even more devout, evenmore pious.Meditate deeply on His words, thosewhich you have heard in your soul in the days ofyour youth so full of light. You have heard His Voicespeaking to your heart with sweet and overpoweringinsistence, and in answering"yes"you have becomethe"relatives"of the Lord:the daughters, the sis-ters,the mothers, the brides. There is no wordwhich indicates nearness or relationship, whichcould not be,in the deepest sense, appropriate toyou. You are,in fact, the “neighbors”of the Lord.
