Sir William Huggins, K.C.B., O.M. - By W.W. Campbell

Oct 20, 2026

A historical biographical account of Sir William Huggins, K.C.B., O.M., linking his life to the development of astronomical spectroscopy. The text reviews his contributions alongside Rutherfurd, Secchi, Angström, Draper, and others, and recounts his career from early education in London to building a private observatory and conducting planetary observations. It details his transition toward spectroscopy after learning Kirchhoff’s discovery about the Sun’s chemical constitution and Fraunhofer lines, including the scientific motivation and early experiments for applying these methods to the stars.

The name of Sir WILLIAM HUGGINS is intimately associatedwith the entire history of astronomical spectroscopy.WithRuTHERFURD,SECCHI,ANGSTRÖM,DRAPER,and others,he wasa pioneer in this subject;and by virtue of long life, enthusiasm, and uncommon wisdom, his contributions have enriched astro-nomical knowledge during a full half century. His lamenteddeath on May I2,I9Io,at the ripe age of eighty-six years, calls for a review of his remarkable career. WILLIAM HUGGINS was born in London on February 7,I824.His father was in commercial life, and was able toprovide the son not only with a good education, but the finan-cial means to follow astronomy in a private capacity, unattachedto university or established observatory. His early educationwas received in the City of London School, and he laterstudied the languages, mathematics, and various branches ofscience extensively under private tutors.Astronomy andmicroscopy were subjects of special interest, and it was adifficult question with him as to which he should attempt toadvance through original investigations. The decision wasmade in favor of astronomy. In I856 he removed to 90 UpperTulse Hill, then a short distance in the open country south ofLondon, now within the great city, where he erected anobservatory in connection with his dwelling-house;and thereall of his work was.done."It consisted of a dome twelve feetin diameter and a transit-room.There was erected in it anequatorially mounted telescope by DoLLAND of five inches Publications of the aperture,at that time looked upon as a large rather than asmall instrument."He commenced work on the usual lines, taking transits, observing, and making drawings of planets. In 1858 the 5-inch refractor was replaced by a Clark 8-inchrefractor of great excellence. In the Nineteenth Century Review for June,I897,SirWILLIAM has given an interesting account of his entry intothe spectroscopic ield:一 "I soon became a little dissatisfied with the routine char-acter of ordinary astronomical work, and in a vague waysought about in my mind for the possibility of research uponthe heavens in a new direction or by new methods. It wasjust at this time, when a vague longing after newer methodsof observation for attacking many of the problems of theheavenly bodies filled my mind, that the news reached me ofKIRCHHOFF's great discovery of the true nature and the chem-ical constitution of the Sun from his interpretation of theFraunhofer lines. “This news was to me like the coming upon a spring of waterin a dry and thirsty land. Here at last presented itself thevery order of work for which in an indefinite way I was look-ing,—name

FAQs

How is Sir William Huggins connected to astronomical spectroscopy in this text?

His name is presented as closely tied to the entire history of astronomical spectroscopy, with his contributions described as enriching astronomical knowledge over about half a century.

What scientific breakthrough influenced Huggins to pursue spectroscopy?

The text highlights Kirchhoff’s discovery of the true nature and chemical constitution of the Sun through interpretation of the Fraunhofer lines, which Huggins saw as a new direction and method for research.

How did Huggins’ approach to observing stars differ from observing the Sun?

He recognized a major challenge due to the faintness of stars and Earth’s motion, and the text notes that while stars appear too distant to show a true disk, their light can be concentrated to increase brightness for telescopic study.
