This text develops the essentials of fraction and decimalheory in small, concise steps. Each frame contains aingle idea. Each new idea is followed by an example.Eachxample is reinforced by a quiz question. Explanations are simple and compact, enabling you toteep the key idea in sharp focus.Key ideas are purposelyepeated. Each repetition,in turn, develops an expansionof the initial concept. Learning is further reinforced by the text's self-quizstructure.Spot Checks, following each new discussion, repeat the text material and give the reader a quick reporton his progress. To the reader who has followed the text, tep by step, the answers to the Spot Check questions areobvious. This obviousness is an indication of successfullearning...of new information and concepts acquiredwithout conscious effort. The Spot Checks are also progress reports. Each ques-tion is keyed to the frame which explains the idea thequestion checks. Thus, any weakness the quiz disclosescan be instantly remedied. Practice Exercises, spotted throughout the book, coverin sequence every major idea developed earlier in the textIf you can answer correctly every question in the PracticeExercises, you can be sure you have learned everythingthis book has to teach. Answers to the Spot Checks and Practice Exercises willalways be found on the following lefthand page. # ACKNOWLEDGMENTS For review of the manuscript of this text, and for manyhelpful suggestions and addenda, the author is immenselygrateful to Mr.Bryan Bunch,Chief Mathematics Editor,Harcourt,Brace and World,Inc.,Mr.Raymond Walsh,Director of Mathematics,Westport Publie School System,Westport,Connecticut and Mrs.Roberta Gleit,GeneralInstructor,P.S.13,Yonkers,N.Y.Th author is also in-debted to Mr.Fred W.Kautz,Mather Junior HighSchool,Darien,Connecticut, who painstakingly checkedall computations in both text and exercises.
