Silent Invasion recounts Dr. Deborah Birx’s first-person account of the Trump administration’s COVID-19 response and the systemic failures she observed, including problems with testing attitudes at the CDC. From her entry into the White House Coronavirus Task Force in late February 2020, the narrative describes hard-won victories, costly mistakes, and institutional groupthink that compounded over months. It contrasts painful missteps with successes such as rapid vaccine development, early health-first state actions, large-scale testing, and community-driven mitigation efforts, emphasizing the need to reform public health institutions.

3the Next PandemicBefore It's Too Late USA $29.99 Canada$36.99 IN LATE FEBRUARY 2020,Dr.Deborah Birx-a lifelong federalhealth official who had worked at the CDC,the State Depart-ment,and the U.S.Army across multiple presidential administra-tions-was asked to join the Trump White House CoronavirusTask Force and assist the already faltering federal response tothe Covid-19 pandemic. For weeks, she'd been raising the alarmbehind the scenes about what she saw happening in public-theapparent lack of urgency at the White House, the routine down-playing of the risks to America, the clear problems with the CDC'sattitude toward testing.Once in the White House, she was taskedwith helping fix the broken federal approach and making PresidentTrump see the danger this virus posed to all of us. Silent Invasion is the story of what she witnessed, experienced, and lived for the next year-an eye-opening,inside account, detailed here for the first time,of how the Trump administration'sCovid-19 response, combined with systemic failures at the CDC,created the greatest public health crisis in modern times.Viewedas an outsider and regarded with suspicion in the West Wing fromday one,Dr.Birx goes beyond the media speculation and politicalmaneuvering to show what she was really up against in the TrumpWhite House.Digging into the hard-fought victories, costlymistakes, and human drama surrounding the administration'sefforts, she examines how institutional malaise and groupthinkat the CDC intersected with the White House's relentless focuson the economy to cripple efforts to control the virus.Far frombeing limited to the pandemic's early weeks, these blunders per-sisted for months, compounding each other throughout, leading tounnecessary deaths, stretching into the 2020 election season, andcontinuing to haunt us today. And yet amid the agonizing missteps were bright spots thatpoint the way forward-the fastest vaccine creation in history, states and governors who put their citizens'health first,univer-sities that effectively harnessed the power of mass testing to stayopen and conduct classes in person, and tribal nations that demon-strated the powerful role of community in curbing spread, despitetheir criminally underfunded healthcare systems.Collectivelythese successes reveal the valiant work of many who were com-mitted to saving lives and finding solutions,as well as highlightthe dire need to reform our public health institutions,so they arenimble and resilient enough to confront the next pandemic. With the pandemic now moving into its third year and con-founding two presidential administrations,Dr.Birx presents astory at once urgent and frustratingly unfinished,as Covid-19 NI lea ner ior Tas he eh PF atti wit Ir anc det Cc cre as da m W mi efl at or be sis ur cC P st si 0 s1 t tl n tl n f S / , 100 # NOISVANLIN37IS The Untold Story of theTrump Administration,Covid-19,and Preventingthe Next PandemicBefore It's Too Late DR.DEBORAH BIRX HARPER SILENT INVASION.Copyright C2022 by Deborah Birx. All rights reserved.Printed in the United States of America. No part of this book may be usedor reproduced in any manner whatsoever without written permission ex-cept in the case of brief quotations embodied in critical articles and re-views.For information, address HarperCollins Publishers,195 Broadway,New York,NY 10007.
