Not the way she’d ever imagined one would sound. It was a heavy, dull thud, and then her brother’s body hit the wet ground. Lucía was already running before her brain had ﬁnished deciding she should. It seemed so far, so far, and the faster she ran, the farther it seemed tobe. It was twenty-four yards, she’d later measure on a map, over andover, as if the number could give her permission to forgive herself. Twenty-four yards between her and Gabriel. Close enough to hear him fall. Too far to stop what had already started. She didn’t make it to him in time. A ﬁgure was already there. Lucía never understood how the alley could be empty one second and occupied the next. She only remembered fragments after that. Dark hair. A body bent over Gabriel. Blood spreading across the pavement. A hand at his throat. Then Gabriel’s arm jerked once before going still. For years, her mind stitched those pieces together into something certain. In the moment, all she could see was the blood. The blood, and the woman bending over her brother, and Gabriel’s hand lifting once, weakly, toward that bent face. Then his hand fell back, and it didn’t lift again. Lucía thought she was watching her brother die in the arms of the thing that had killed him. Her body locked in place where she stood. She wanted to run toward him, to scream, but she couldn’t move. She couldn’t move when the woman lifted her head. She stood in the shadows and watched her brother die. She’d never forgiven herself, never admitted it either. Lucía only remembered fragments after that. Blood on the pavement. Sirens somewhere in the distance. Another shape moving through the rain too fast for her eyes to follow clearly. She remembered backing away. She remembered the panic ﬁnally catching up with her body all at once. Then she was running before her mind had fully understood what she’d seen. By the time she ﬁnally forced herself back toward the alley, Gabriel was gone. Only the blood remained. For three years, she carried that night in her chest like a wound that wouldn’t close. She built her life around it.
