This document presents a historical reflection by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson regarding the punctuation of Shakespearean works, originally written as a letter to the editor of The Times in 1911. The author shares his personal experience in attempting to revise the punctuation of Shakespeare's Sonnets, only to discover that the original seventeenth-century printing was not haphazard. Instead, the author argues that the punctuation is grounded in literary emphasis and rhetorical gesture rather than modern grammatical rules. This essay serves as a defense of the original printers' methods, advocating for the preservation of the authentic structure found in early editions such as the First Folio and the 1609 edition of the Sonnets, thereby providing valuable insight into the evolution of editorial practices and the appreciation of Shakespeare's original textual presentation.
