Science Matters! Volume 9 section “Keeping warm and cool” introduces key science vocabulary used to discuss heat and temperature. A word list explains terms such as Celsius scale, thermometer, heat, vacuum flask, conduction, convection, radiation, and insulation, with short definitions and examples. It also covers body responses like shivering and goosebumps, and animal strategies for staying warm or cool, connecting everyday experiences to basic heat transfer ideas.

A solid material madefrom oil. ## RADLATION The direct transfer of heatbetween objects by means ofheat rays. DRAFT A flow of cold air in a home. EVAPORATE To change from liquid waterto water vapor in the air. SHIVER To shake uncontrollably dueto cold. FIBER Long strands of material.Hair, fur, and wool are naturalfibers, but many artificial fibersare also commonly used. SWEAT To lose large amounts ofwater and salts from thepores in the skin. ## TEMPERATURE GOOSEBUMPS The little pimples of skinthat stick up when your skinis cold. A measure of how warm orcool something is. ## THERMOMETER An instrument for measuringtemperature. ## HEAT A form of energy.Heat isproduced when work is done, such as moving around.Thefast flow of electricity in a wirecan also produce heat,as canburning a substance like gas. ## VACUUM FLASK A fask designed to keepits contents hot or cold forlong periods by stoppingconduction, convection, andradiation of heat. ## HYPOTHERMIA A serious condition causedwhen the inside of the bodybecomes very cold. ## WARM-BLOODED A term used for animalsthat maintain a constanttemperature inside theirbodies and do not dependon the temperature of theirsurroundings. INSULATOR A substance that will notconduct heat very well.Goodheat insulators are usually alsogood insulators of electricity. WEAVE,WOVEN To make a fine net of fibersfor use in clothing. A scale for measuringtemperature named for itsinventor, scientist AndersCelsius. On this scale there are100 divisions, called degrees, between 0(the temperatureof melting ice)and 100(thetemperature of boiling water). ## COLD-BLOODED A term used for animals thatdo not maintain a constantbody temperature and needto get heat from theirsurroundings before they canbecome active. ## CONDUCTION The fow of heat from warmto cool objects when they aretouching or from a warm partof an object to cooler parts ofthe same object. ## CONDUCTOR A substance that allows heatto flow through it easily.Good heat conductors are alsousually good conductors ofelectricity. ## CONVECTION The churning movement thathappens in liquids and gaseswhen they are heated frombelow. ## CORK A natural bark of the cork oaktree. It is a very good insulator. People often say how warm it is outside,or how warm or cold something is. When we describe something as warmor cold,we are comparing it to what feels 1 Heat flows from the hot Sun to our colderbody. As more heat is transferred,we can feeluncomfortably hot. That is when people onbeaches head for the sea to cool off. # Feeling warm and cold Our feeling of warmness—calledTEMPERATURE—is actually quiteunreliable and easily fooled. Feet are among the most temperature-sensitive parts of the body.Even so,ifyou put one bare foot on a piece of woodand put the other bare foot on a sheetof metal, the metal will feel colder, eventhough you know the wood and the metalare at the same temperature(Picture 2). Metals feel colder than other materialseven when they are in the same Metalthe temperature

FAQs

What is the Celsius scale and how is it used?

The Celsius scale measures how warm or cool something is, using degrees. On this scale, boiling water is 100°C and freezing water is 0°C.

How does a thermometer measure temperature?

A thermometer measures temperature using a narrow tube and a bulb filled with a liquid. As the bulb warms, both the liquid and glass expand, and the liquid rises to indicate temperature on the marked scale.

What do conduction, convection, and radiation mean?

Conduction is heat flowing through touching materials, convection is the churning movement in liquids and gases when heated from below, and radiation is the direct transfer of heat by heat rays.
