Commenting on the recentdeaths oftwo 14-year-old girls be-lieved to have fallen from anabandoned residential buildingin Buntong,Ipoh,after reported-ly leaving their school,Saifuddinsaid each case must be assessedbased on its own facts before anyconclusions are drawn. He said the police,togetherwith the National Anti-DrugsAgency(Nada),had deployed li-aison officers to schools nation-wide to strengthen engagementand facilitate early intervention. "We place school liaison offi-cers in schools.It is not only thepolice,Nada also assigns officers. "The purpose is for them to be-come the first point of contact forschools,parentsand students,es-pecially in cases involving bul-lying or other forms of harass-ment,"he said. He said this after opening thePrisons Department's MadaniAdopted Village and MadaniAdopted School programmes atDewan PDT Tanjung Piandanghere today. He said school safety encom-passes a wide range of issues andshould not be viewed solelythrough thelens of bullying. "We have to look at every casebased on the facts.A few weeksago,there was an incident inPadang Terap,Kedah,involving astudent who fell from a schoolbuilding.Initial reports simplystated that a studenthad fallen. "However,police investiga-tions found that eyewitnessessaw the student attempting to re-trieve a bird's nest from theschool roof before slipping. "In such circumstances,the in-cident was beyond the control orreach of the school liaison offi-cer,"he said. He said school liaison officersregularly conduct awarenesstalks and educational pro-grammes to educate students onpersonal safety and appropriatebehaviour in school. "If such incidents continue to occur,it underscores the need forcooperation from all parties,in-cluding school authorities,thepolice,parent-teacher associa-tions and parents. “Students must also be contin-uously exposed to awareness pro-grammes on personal safety inschool.That is the most practicalapproach,"he said. On whether school liaison of-ficers were assigned only to se-lected schools,Saifuddin said po-lice had profiled schools accord-ing to their risk levels. "We knaw the issues faced byeach school,whether they involvetruancy,gangsterism or otherproblems affecting students. "The appointment of school li-aison officers is determined bythe police in cooperation with theschools and the programme is al-ready being implemented.” Earlier,Bukit Aman Crime Pre-vention and Community SafetyDepartment director Datuk NoorHisam Nordin said police officershad been assigned to all 10,255schools under the EducationMinistry,comprising 2,481 sec-ondary schools and7,774 primaryschools.
