Uploaded by Grenda

A concise comparison of the redesigned SAT and ACT scoring systems, section structure, and test timing. The SAT returns to a 1600-point scale with two section scores—Reading and Writing, and Math—while the ACT uses a 1–36 scale and averages four sections into a composite score. Both exams treat the optional essay separately and do not include it in totals. The guide highlights differences in question counts, time per section, math calculator rules, and the SAT’s broader verbal and advanced content versus the ACT’s section focus and scientific-reasoning approach.

FAQs

How are the SAT and ACT total scores calculated, and does the essay affect them?

The SAT has a total based on two section scores (Reading & Writing, and Math). The ACT averages four section scores into a composite total. In both exams, the optional essay is scored separately and does not factor into the total score.

What are the section scores and timing differences between the SAT and ACT?

The SAT uses two section scores: Reading & Writing and Math, with timed sections ranging from 25 to 65 minutes. The ACT has four sections—English, Math, Reading, and Science—each contributing to an averaged composite, with section times totaling about 35 to 60 minutes per section.

How does the math section format differ regarding calculators and question types?

On the SAT, some math questions are calculator allowed and others are not, and the SAT includes student-produced response questions. The ACT math section allows calculator and does not include student-produced response questions.
