These celebrations, however, seem to have been premature. While the College Board did banishall of the sentence completions and traditional vocabulary words,it replaced them with a new setof words-one that was not necessarily less challenging. As we have discovered, many studentsare uncertain about the meaning of words such as underpinning and phrases such as arrantpurposelessness. And that in turn led us to ask a question:exactly what role does vocabulary playon the new SAT? This question prompted us to launch an exhaustive (and exhausting)analysis of vocabulary onboth the new Reading Test and the new Writing and Language Test.We also took a close look atthe new Essay. Our analysis revealed that vocabulary continues to play a significant role on theexam. However, that role is subtler than it was on the old SAT.Instead of being concentrated in19 sentence completions and a handful of vocabulary-in-context questions, the new SATvocabulary takes a variety of forms. Our findings convinced us that the new SAT requires a new approach to vocabulary. In the past,SAT prep books featured long lists containing hundreds of alphabetized words. This book doesnot do that.Instead,we have devoted a chapter to the following four specific types of vocabularyquestions: 1.Vocabulary In Context 2.Passage-Based Vocabulary 3.Commonly Confused Words 4.Transitional Words and Phrases Each chapter provides carefully sequenced sets of guided and independent practice questions, followed by detailed explanations. We conclude this book with a special section on the new SAT Essay.Although this portion of thetest is optional,a majority of students are choosing to sit for it.In addition to providing a generaltemplate for constructing a strong five-paragraph essay,we include specific examples of how touse effective transitions and strong, descriptive vocabulary to achieve a high score. The chapterconcludes with two sample student essays that earned a top score of 24 on the actual exam. We have written this book with two main goals.First,we strive to present an enjoyable andstimulating course. And second,we strive to teach content and skills that will help all studentsexcel on the SAT. Good luck on your exam! Larry Krieger and Erica L.MeltzerFebruary 2017 # Vocabulary in Conte

FAQs

What changed in SAT vocabulary compared with the older test?

The College Board removed traditional vocabulary lists and sentence completions, but replaced them with new vocabulary forms. The role of vocabulary remains significant, though it is more subtle and appears in multiple question types.

How do vocabulary-in-context questions work on the SAT Reading Test?

They test the ability to use contextual clues to determine the meaning of a word or phrase used with unusual wording or multiple definitions. The passage contains key elements that match one of the answer choices.

Why is context determining meaning a key strategy?

Words may keep a literal or most common meaning in some cases, but in other cases the meaning can shift entirely. The book emphasizes not relying on assumptions based only on typical dictionary definitions.
