Outside I slowly walked toward the large, black chicken, talking to her as I got closer. She kept herself busy looking around for food. Rosie, as I came to call her, didn’t seem particularly afraid of me. I guess she must have been a lost pet wandering around. The rest of the afternoon she seemed happy to wander the walkways, around the bushes, and the grassy areas around our building I even put a posted a “Found Chicken” message on our community forum. But no one was missing a chicken. At about six o’clock in the evening, my wife and I were finishing dinner when we heard a loud thud. We looked all around our apartment but couldn’t find anything wrong. I thought that maybe the noise was from outside, so I walked toward the front door and heard a soft, drawn out “bu uk.” I knew then that the chicken was still outside our apartment. When I opened the door, there was Rosie standing right in the middle of the doorway like she expected to come into our apartment. It seemed that she had“knocked” on our front door. My wife asked me if we should invite her in. With a little bit of coaxing, she slowly walked right into our apartment. As my wife and I were looking for somewhere that she could spend the night, she jumped right up on our soft recliner chair. But that wasn’t going to work for us, so my wife picked her up and I put down a plastic garbage bag and towel on the chair. Then my wife put Rosie back on the chair. After Rosie settled herself for the night, we dimmed the lights and cleaned up the kitchen after dinner. Then we went to bed ourselves. Rosie was an excellent guest! We did not hear a peep from her the entire night. In the morning we found her standing in the recliner waiting for us. We gave her some water and some food in a dish before we took her outside. Later that day we found where her owner lived and carried her safely back home. Her owner was relieved to have her returned to him. But we will always remember Rosie and never forget her unexpected visit. She will forever live in our hearts!
