ROMANTIC AGE TO VICTORIAN AGE (1800-1900) HANDWRITTEN NOTES BY YOGESH TIWARI ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ROMANTIC AGE (1800 TO 1850 AD) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- POETS 1. WILLIAM WORDSWORTH William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Romantic movement, which sought to emphasize emotion, individualism, and a profound connection to nature. Wordsworth's poetry is marked by its exploration of the human experience in relation to the natural world, where he often sees nature as a source of inspiration, moral clarity, and emotional depth. One of his most notable contributions to literature is the collection Lyrical Ballads, co-authored with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, published in 1798. This collection marked a departure from the neoclassical emphasis on formality and decorum, instead embracing the language of everyday people and focusing on the beauty found in simple experiences. In poems like “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” Wordsworth celebrates the restorative power of nature and memory. The poem depicts the beauty of a field of daffodils, capturing how such moments can lead to profound joy and reflection, even in times of solitude. His famous belief that poetry should be “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” underscores his commitment to authenticity and emotional truth. Wordsworth's later works, such as The Prelude, offer a deeply personal exploration of his own spiritual and artistic development, emphasizing the role of nature in shaping his identity. Through his unique voice and philosophy, Wordsworth has left a lasting legacy, influencing not only poetry but also the broader cultural understanding of nature and self. MAJOR WORKS:- Lyrical Ballads (1798 & 1800) Lyrical Ballads is one of the most important collections in the history of English literature, marking the formal beginning of the Romantic movement. First published in 1798, the collection was a collaborative effort between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Wordsworth contributed most of the poems, while Coleridge’s major contribution was the renowned The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The second edition of Lyrical Ballads, published in 1800, featured additional poems and Wordsworth’s famous "Preface to Lyrical Ballads,"which became one of the most significant manifestos of Romantic poetry. Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads challenged the traditional conventions of 18thcentury poetry. In the Preface, he emphasized that poetry should focus on the lives of ordinary people and everyday experiences, rather than grandiose or elevated subjects. His revolutionary ideas about poetry were deeply rooted in his belief that the essence of poetry is found in the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings,"which should be conveyed in "the language really used by men. " For Wordsworth, nature was not just a backdrop but an essential source of inspiration, moral guidance, and emotional solace. The collection itself is characterized by themes such as the beauty and healing power of nature, the emotional intensity of simple rural life, and the importance of personal experience. Wordsworth’s poems in Lyrical Ballads often portray rustic, everyday characters, such as shepherds, reapers, and solitary figures, while presenting nature as a force of wisdom and emotional renewal. Some of the notable poems from the collection include "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," "We Are Seven," "Simon Lee," and "The Tables Turned. " In the second edition of 1800, Wordsworth added more poems, including the"Lucy Poems" and Michael, which continued his exploration of rural life, the human relationship with nature, and the passage of time. The Preface to Lyrical Ballads provided a theoretical foundation for Romantic poetry, emphasizing the poet’s role as a sensitive observer of the natu
