Robinson Crusoe begins his story at sea, after growing up in York in a German-descended family. He leaves his father’s advice and sails from Hull to London, then faces heavy storms that destroy the ship and drive him into small-boat survival. Determined to return to life at sea, he travels to new countries, trades on routes to Guinea, and later builds a sugar farm in Brazil. Eventually he departs Brazil for Africa, where another long storm tests him again.
