This monograph provides a critical appreciation of the life and literary contributions of the English poet Robert Bridges (1844-1930). Authored by John Sparrow, the essay examines Bridges' philosophical approach to poetry, specifically focusing on his magnum opus, The Testament of Beauty, which articulates the poet's belief in the primacy of beauty. As part of the 'Writers and their Work' series published for the British Council and the National Book League, the text explores how Bridges' own creative output reflects his conception of the artist's role. It features detailed bibliographic references to his major collections, including 'Shorter Poems' and 'New Verse,' serving as both an essential guide for established admirers and a comprehensive introduction for new readers of his expansive and refined body of work.
