A BOOK OF INSTRUCTION TOE THE # ORGANIZATION,GOVERNMENT AND CEREMONIES OF CHAPTERS OF THE OBDER IX EVERY DEPARTMENT. BY k ROBERT IACOY, PAST GRAND PATRON GRAND CHAPTER OF NEW YORK. 1 360 ILLUSTRATED. NEW YORK:ROBERT MACOY,PUBLISHER,27-4 BABCLAY STREET. 1876. HS853 89 Copyrighted byROBERT MACOY, 1876. PREFACE. HAVING been engaged for a number of years indisseminating the beautiful Order of the East-ern Star, and believing that the system is fast becom-ing deeply rooted in the affections of the MasonicCraft and their female relatives, and the belief pre-vails that the time is not far distant when this sys-tem of the Adoptive Rite will receive Masonic officialrecognition, and meet with general acceptance, evenwhere it is now neglected or proscribed. These, andother good reasons, have been the inducements forproducing this volume upon the plan now offered. The want of some systematic organization has beenthe leading cause of retarding its general usefulness formany years, and it may be set down as an axiom, thatno degree, however remotely connected with any in-stitution,can take a high place among us,unless itpossess a well-conceived and philosophic basis ofceremonial, symbolism, and constitutional regulation.Without these it is subject to constant changes froma multiplicity of minds, which tend to destroy itsuniversality, and give its opponents just grounds fortheir cavilings. The history of all the Masonic de-grees(above the first three)proves this. The degrees of the Chapter,Counciland Commandery were neverprized until,in the last generation, they were thuswrought out, framed together, and perfectly systema-tized.Their opponents have now become their warm-est advocates, and they stand upon an immutablefoundation. Believing that there are equal grounds of stabilityin the system of the Order of the Eastern Star, thepresent Ritual is presented. In this pleasant labor Ihave had the counsel of the highest intellects of theAdoptive System,to whom I cheerfully acknowledgemy obligations and offer my hearty thanks.BrotherRobert Morris, whose labors in connection with thissubject are well known, has given his unqualifiedapprobation of the present plan.I have every reasonto believe that,in the completion of this work, nothing has been left undone that will conduce to thepermanency, prosperity, and extended usefulness ofthe Order of the Eastern Star. ROBERT MACOY.
