Riding the wave ★★★★★ For the new Hokusai show 􀀂 Jonathan Jones Review, page 9 Burnham orders radical rethink of options to fixThames Water Kiran Stacey PippaCrerar Jessica Elgot Andy Burnham has told officials toripup their plans for how to 􀀄x Thames Water and present him with more radical options for what to do with the stricken company. In what is seen as a test of his promise to bring the “essentials of life”under public control, the primeminister is urging his advisers to go back to the drawing board and create a new list of policies for the utility. One option being looked at is to convert about £100mof outstanding 􀀄nes into a government stake in the company, saving its creditors money but giving ministers some say in how the business is run. Burnham previously said he would nationalise Thames, which is running out of cash and recently asked its creditors for an additional £2.4bn, but is struggling to 􀀄nd away todo so without spending billions of pounds, getting tied up in a lengthy court battle, or both. Sources familiar with the primeminister’s thinking say he has told policy officials across Whitehall to contemplate options that were not previously considered feasible, even if that means spending taxpayer money and going to court. One government source described the fate of the water company as a“litmus test”of whether the government could deal with challenges in the medium term, rather than just immediate cost of living support and longer-term structural changes.“There are more options than people have assumed to date including ones that have never been properly considered,” the source said. Another said the prime minister had told his officials to“look at all the options and not feel constrained”, ina departure from the advice under Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer. Burnham has promised to end what he calls “40 years of neoliberalism” and instructed ministers to draft a 10-year plan for government later this year, including detailed proposals for bringing utilities under public control. Farage aide casts doubt on £5m gift‘for security’ Anna Isaac Financial investigations editor Nigel Farage undermined his own claims that a £5m gift was for security when he referred to the money as a reward for Brexit, according to one of his closest aides. The apparent admission came in undercover footage seen by the Guardian in which Dan Jukes says it is “priced in” for Farage to pro􀀄t from politics. The footage raises fresh questions about the party leader’s statements that the gift was solely for security purposes. The Reform UK leader is awaiting the outcome of a parliamentary watchdog investigation into whether or not the £5m from the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, 􀀄rst revealed by the Guardian, should have been declared under parliamentary rules. Farage told the Sun on 14 May:“And this [£5m] was given to me on an unconditional basis, completely unconditional basis. But frankly, it was givenasa reward for campaigning for Brexit for 27 years.” Now, previously unpublished footage from the Curfews imposed in France after riots Jon Henley Paris Partial curfews have been issued for some French cities, including parts of Paris, after the government admitted police had “lost control”during violent weekend protests around the country. Sébastien Lecornu, the French prime minister, said after an emergency cabinet meeting yesterday he was “fully resolved to restore public order” and had called for “local and partial” curfews if needed. There was“no question” of imposing a full curfew on entire cities, he added. His office said partial curfews would be imposed from 8pm to 6am last night and tonight in four northern cities, including Lille. Curfews were also issued by police for two locations in Paris: Place de la République, where rioting took place on Saturday, and the shopping 􀀉􀀇 􀀁 􀀂􀀂􀀃􀀄􀀅􀀆 􀀇􀀃􀀂􀀈􀀄􀀆 6 􀀂 13 􀀂 2 􀀂 Robinson on trial Far-right act
