As a third edition of this little volume is called for,I havetaken the opportunity of adding two more Essays:the briefdialogue on The Failure of Philosophy, and some observa-tions on The Metaphysics of Fine Art.The latter Essay isa rendering of such portions of a chapter in the original, entitled Zur Metaphysik des Schönen,as appear to be gene-rally interesting and easily intelligible. The chief statementof Schopenhauer’s view of Art is to be found in his largework;but as he gives a short essay in his Parerga,I havethought it well to include it in this selection. The Prefatory Note to be found in the first and secondeditlons of this yolume is here omitted. It is now incor-porated with the main Preface to the series in The Wisdomof Life. T.B.S. FBB,,1891.
