Sep 29, 2026

Realism in Japanese art is examined through observation-driven depictions of nature and human experience across centuries. The exhibition traces how realism evolved from close fidelity to what is real, shaped by artists’ subjects, styles, and techniques in portraiture, scroll painting, and Genjitsu. It highlights major works, from an ancient clay boar to a late nineteenth-century oil painting, and presents Buddhist and secular portrait traditions emphasizing formal presence and psychological presence.

An enigmatic term in both the East and West, realism encompasses theartist's subject, his style, and techniques of painting or sculpting.Japaneseartists boldly and explicitly depicted a diversity of themes—lofty leaders ofsecular and religious communities, the beauties of native landscape,or theawesome military battles and the imagined tortures of hell.During theeleventh century Lady Murasaki wrote in the classic novel The Tale ofGenji:“Good things and bad things alike...are things of this world.” This guide briefly outlines major themes of realism in Japanese art.It isdivided into three sections:Portraiture,E-maki,and Genjitsu. It serves asan invitation to the exhibition and its book-catalogue,Reflections of Real-ity in Japanese Art.The catalogue numbers cited refer to that volume. ## 1.Portrait of Priest Chōgen(cat.no.51)Kamakura period,13th centuryWood with color Shindaibutsu-ji,Mie PrefectureImportant Cultural Property Portraiture.the rendering of a physical likenesscal presence, comprises a major exponent of reaArtists immortalized rulers.priests, and poets inimages.Buddhism.introduced from the mainlanfostered a commemorative portrait tradition thatachievement of Japanese art. This foreign doctrindeities, scriptures.and architectural plans but aiswho founded the new sects and temples.Priest-p ### 1.Portrait of Priest Chōgen Minamoto Yoritomo, the firstshōgun of the Kamakura period, charged Sunjobu Chōgen(1120-1206)to administer the restorationof the eighth-century temple com-plex,the Todaiji,in Nara,Japan.Chōgen founded at least two othertemples during his travels throughthe country to solicit funds for theproject. This moving portrait, oneof three sculpted likenesses of Chō-gen,is housed in the founder's hallof one such temple—the Shindai-butsu-ji in Mie Prefecture.Theforbidding portrait reveals thepowerful character of the eighty-year-old abbot. He sits on thefloor, his veined hands firmlyclenched, his lined face grimlydetermined.Inlaid crystal eyesglint beneath narrow eyelids. 100 ### 2.Portrait ofHojo Tokiyori The small group of secular por-traits dating from the late thir-teenth century exhibit the sametechnical achievements and realis-tic characteristics of Kamakurapriest-portraits.Hōjo Tokiyori(1227-1263),a regent or chiefofficer of the Kamakura militarygovernment, controlled bothshōgun and emperor after thedeath of Minamoto Yoritomo(1147-1199).His portrait epito-mizes the formality of court dressand pose more frequently seen inpaintings of court ceremonies suchas poetry contests.Tokiyori sportsthe court attire of an official—thestiff, blousing pants and a highleather hat.He sits frontally onthe floor, his knees spread and feettucked beneath his torso. His lefthand rests on his thigh while theright is curled to hold a tablet ofrank. The inlaid crystal eyes con-vey Tokiyori's confident presence. The sculpture is traditionallydated 1263,the year of Tokiyori'sdeath. 2.Portrait of HōjōTokiyori(cat.no.62)Kamakura period,13th centuryWood with color Kenchō-ji,Kanagawa PrefectureImportant Cultural Property ### 3.Portr
