The process described in claim 1 in which the coilingspeed after cooling is more than 3000 m/min. # Detailed explanation of the invention This invention relates to a process for the manufacture offibers having latent curling-shrinking characteristics. Conventionally,the following processes are known as processesfor the manufacture of fibers having latent curling-shrinkingcharacteristics. One is a process in which two polymers with differentshrinkage characteristics are merged in an outlet hole to form Page 3 a composite filament. However,in this process,not only aredifferent polymers required,but also a complicated compositespinning apparatus is needed,and the spinning operation is alsocomplicated. Another process is one in which the filament iscooled nonuniformly during spinning. A complicated apparatusis also required in this process. In spinning,yarn breakageor the mutual adherence of single yarns is apt to occur. It isdifficult to obtain high-quality products industrially. Further-more,there is a process in which a running filament is pressedagainst a knife edge to render an internal strain in the filament.However,this process wil1 cause damage in the filament and isundesirable. In addition,in recent years,a process for obtaining fiberswith latent curling-shrinking characteristics has been disclosedin Japanese Kokai Patent No.Sho 54[1979]-42415,in which meltsof a fiber-forming polymer moving at two different speeds areallowed to merge and adhere to each other near the surface of the spinning clasp. The mechanism for the latent curling-shrinkingdiscovery in this process is the occurrence of vibrations ofmelt streams near the merging point of melt streams moving attwo different speeds. As a result,a filament having a deniervariation can be obtained. Since the said filament with thedenier variation has different degrees of shrinkages in thickand thin sections,a filament yarn having curling-shrinkingcharacteristics with the curling-shrinking discovery by heattreatment can be obtained. In a comparison of this process withthe composite spinning process described above,it has the Page 4 advantages of being a single kind of polymer and requiring nocomplicated spinning apparatus.
