The text is a critical, example-rich discussion of Robert Greene’s “The 48 Laws of Power,” using historical anecdotes to explain how courtiers and ambitious actors misjudge authority and social dynamics. It contrasts superficial guidance about achieving power with cautionary lessons about mistakes, vanity, and greed, illustrated through episodes involving rulers and advisors. It further examines Greene’s authority and life claims while framing the book’s popularity as a sign of broader economic and cultural anxieties.

Author background and guidance

Intending the opposite,Greene has ac-tually produced one of the best argumentssince the New Testament for humility andobscurity. The English dandy Beau Brum-mell,a confidant of the Prince of Wales, upset the prince with a single thoughtlessremark, was banished from the court and"died in the most pitiable poverty, aloneand deranged.”Kind of makes gettingclose to power seem hardly worth it,doesn’t it?Or imagine yourself in the posi-tion of the keeper of the crown for the HanEmperor Chao, seeing your master falldrunkenly asleep in the garden.Attempt-ing to follow Law 24(“play the perfectcourtier”),you might give the ruler yourown coat to keep him warm.Bad mis-take!—on awakening,Chao decreed thatthe crown-keeper,whose purview washeadwear, had overstepped his authority, and had him executed. Greene's point, needless to say, wasnot the emperor's cruelty—the cruelty, vanity and greed of superiors is a givenhere—but the courtier's mistake in tryingtoo hard to win approval.(The possibilitythat he was motivated by simple compas-sion is not admitted.)But with 48 laws toremember, almost all with their own ex-ceptions and qualifications, who couldblame him?Perhaps he was attempting toimplement Law 6(“court attention at allcosts”)or Law 11(“learn to keep peopledependent on you”).The situation is re-mote from the dilemmas you might face inthe business world. But should the mod-ern corporate courtier follow the adviceon page 180("be frugal with flattery"),orthat which comes six pages later("in mat-ters of taste you can never be too obse-quious with your master”)? Big Mach:For500 years, the last wordin career advancement and political intrigue essence of power,”much as the great Flor-entine thinker Machiavelli did half a mil-lennium ago in“The Prince.”Machiavellinever stooped to dispense mere get-rich-quick advice, and neither does Greene.Hisrules are couched as grand abstractionsabout human nature(“always say less thannecessary”;“assume formlessness”;“poseas a friend, work as a spy").His examplesare drawn not from the mundane world ofChrysler or Sony but the epic struggles ofthe noble Romans,Renaissance princesand an immense cast of ancient Chineseemperors, generals and courtiers.(He alsodisplays a fondness for 19th-century Amer-ican con men and the notoriously deviousart dealer Joseph Duveen.)But the lessonthe reader is likely to take away is not howalluring and easy it is to achieve power andriches. It's screw up and someone is going topour molten lead in your ear. Bx JERRY ADLER You won't,unfortunately, find muchguidance in Greene's own life and career. In conformity to Law 25("recreate your-self'),the book's jacket copy says the 39-year-old author "has been an editor at Es-quire,"although the actual position he heldthere,it turns out,was editorial assistant."Also a playwright,"he has worked in Hol-lywood since 1987 without getting a singlescript produced. He did, however, get in-spiration from some of the great Holly-wood power players of our time, likeMadonna.(“She can be very charming butyou never want to mess with her.”)He haswritten an occasionally amusing and—forits genre-surprisingly erudite book. But ifbusinessmen are buying it as aguide to howto operate in the real world, only one wordofadvice comes to mind.
