This technical reference document provides a comprehensive lookup chart for calculating bend allowances (BA) for sheet metal air bends using mild steel. It specifies recommended die widths and male die radii based on material thickness ranging from 5/8 inch to 23 gauge. The document includes the theoretical bend radius formulas and specific calculation models utilized to determine appropriate bend allowances for 90-degree bends. It serves as an essential resource for metal fabrication, offering practical guidance for estimating blank widths. Users are cautioned that these figures are approximate and that actual results should be verified through testing. It emphasizes the importance of utilizing one leg and half the bend allowance during the gaging process to achieve accurate dimensions for complex metal forming operations.

FAQs

How is the blank width calculated using this chart?

The blank width is calculated using the formula: BLANK WIDTH = L1 + L2 + BEND ALLOWANCE (BA), where L1 and L2 are the lengths of the two legs.

Are the calculated bend allowances considered exact dimensions?

No, the bend allowances provided are approximate. Actual dimensions must be verified by making the bend and measuring the physical results.

What formula is used for gaging purposes according to the document?

For gaging, you should use only one leg and add one-half of the bend allowance to approximate the distance.
