Contents - Prayers for the Church and the World

① LONDON:S.P.C.K. "Ye that are the Lord's remembrancers, take ye norest, and give Him no rest, till He establish, and tillHe make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”ISA.Ixii.6,7(R.V.). First published I929 # PREFACE OF the prayers in this book,No.64 contains materialsupplied by George, sometime Bishop of Rockhamp-ton,Australia;and Nos.2,4,5,II,I5,2I,22 bythe Rev.A.D.Kelly,of the Society of the SacredMission,Kelham, without whose incentive andencouragement the book would not have appeared.No.23 contains three prayers,of which the first isadapted from one by Dr.Samuel Johnson;thesecond is from those issued by Dr.Bray's Associates;and the third is from St.Thomas of Aquinum.No.3I is a prayer published by authority on June 27,I902,on the occasion of the illness of King EdwardVII.No.33 follows the wording of the Book ofCommon Prayer.No.44 is in verse:as it refusedto take any other form,it was allowed, like a spoiltchild,to have its own way.No.47 is from the OrdoRomanus Primus.No.48 has been altered from aMS.prayer of which I do not know the origin. And if any begrudge the last, let him consider someeffigied crusader, who,if he joins his hands in cease-less supplication, does not disdain to rest his feetupon his dog.For the purpose of this book,it hasbeen thought undesirable for the most part to dis- tinguish quotations from the Bible or elsewhere(as inNos.42 or 6o)by any special marks. Perhaps one little word to those who use this bookmay not be taken amiss. Its subtitle is also itscriticism, for it is not in books that true intercessionsare found.Nevertheless there is a real use forprinted intercessions in providing, like a springboardfor a swimmer,a direction and a start. Not everyonewould care to use them exactly as they stand:buteach would express his petitions with a difference,be it but an interior silence,a confession,or a name. FAQs

Who provided some of the prayers included in the book?

The preface states that No. 64 uses materials supplied by George, a sometime Bishop of Rockhampton, Australia, while Nos. 2, 4, 5, 11, 15, 21, and 22 are from the Rev. A. D. Kelly.

How does the book suggest users should approach the printed intercessions?

It says printed intercessions can provide direction and a start, but each user may express petitions differently, including through an interior silence, confession, or a name.

Why does the book avoid special marks for some Bible quotations?

For most of the book it is thought undesirable to distinguish quotations from the Bible or elsewhere by special marks, such as in Nos. 42 or 60.
