Sep 29, 2026

A collection of missionary prayers intended for the World-wide Church, reflecting a shared Christian experience across older sending churches and younger receiving churches. The foreword explains the movement from outdated “missionary” prayers toward new mutual and common intercession. Guidance includes the use of biddings, optional adaptation for special places, and notes on inserting responses or observing silence. Compiled after Mrs. Thelma Glossop’s early departure, the volume is completed by the Revd. J. Gordon Cox.

# PR A YER S OF THE # WORLD-WIDECHURCH S.P.G. ## PRICE 3/6 ## PRAYERS OFTHE WORLD-WIDE CHURCH ## Foreword THE appearance of another book of“missionary”prayers mayseem to require justification. Its defence lies in the title.Thisis intended as a selection of prayers not so much for,as of,theWorld-wide Church. It reflects the growing sense amongChristians in every land, and in Churches alike Older and Youngerin age and maturity,of a common experience. The earlierdivision of Churches into the"sending"Churches of landslong-evangelised,and the“receiving”or"missionary"Churches in countries which had only recently received theGospel,is no longer true to fact.On the one hand, the OlderChurches are experiencing a drift from Christianity;they arethus learning afresh their character as missionary bodies, andare faced with(an often healthy)loss of privilege,if not activepersecution. On the other hand, the Younger Churches aregrowing to maturity, are increasingly self-conscious,and areeager for a rightful independence. Against such a background, the old,well-tried“missionary”prayers have become out-of-date,expressive of a situationlargely(though of course never wholly,or everywhere)past. The new type of prayer is only slowly emerging. It will comein due course to be written and Christians of every race will joinin the utterances of their fellow-Christians of other races.Weare able to include here a few,but only a few,of such prayers. But meanwhile the collection here offered by the S.P.G.is anattempt to express this new balance of mutual and commonprayer within the World-wide Church;a prayer which is mutual, one for another,on terms of a shared equality within the OneBody,a prayer also which is common as expressing needs andexperiences which are common to the whole Fellowship ofChrist's people.Such prayer is the circulation of the life-bloodof the Church. The devotions in this little volume are put forth with the hopeand desire that they may both express this new attitude, andenable those who use them to enter more deeply,by such use, into the realisation of membership in the World-wide Church. The main work of compilation was due to Mrs.ThelmaGlossop, who was called suddenly to the Church Expectantbefore the manuscript was finished;its completion was entrustedto the Revd.J.Gordon Cox,formerly a missionary of the Societyat Cawnpore. It is hoped that these prayers may be used in both public andprivate intercessions. The biddings may of course be sup-plemented as particular needs arise. Many of the prayers canbe readily adapted for the needs of special places. In the useof capitals and in punctuation modern editions of the PrayerBook have been followed. HENRY DE CANDOLE. NoTE ON THE USE OF RESPONSES. Responses have not been inserted after all the biddings.Itis suggested that where these prayers are used with a group ofpeople who understand the use of silence,a short period of quietshould follow each bidding. Where the congregation is not yet trained in the use ofsilence,it may be better to use responses. After each Thanks-giving the versicle and response might be: V.Let us bless the Lord: R).Thanks be to God. and after each Petition, the versicle and response: V.○Lord, hear our prayer:R.And let our cry come unto thee. ## Prayers of the World-wide Church PAGEADORATION .4PENITENCE .·5THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORLD-WIDE CHURCH6FoR THE CoMING OF THE KINGDOM.8FoR THE YoUNGER CHURCHES··IOFoR THE OLDER CHURCHES.IIFoR UNITY .I2FoR THE MINISTRY .I4FoR MISSIONARIES ..I6FoR CHRISTIANS IN ALL LANDSI8FoR NEW CHRISTIANS20FoR CHRISTIANS IN TEMPTATION .·20FoR CHRISTIANS LIVING IN FOREIGN LANDS·2IFoR CHRISTIANS IN DANGER AND PERSECUTION22FoR CHRISTIAN HOMES·23FoR EDUCATIONAL WORK24FoR MEDICAL WORK26FoR AFRICA .28FoR THE IsLANDS OF THE PACIFIC .29FoR THE WEST INDIES·29FoR INDIA .·30FoR JAPAN .·33FoR CHINA .·34FoR KOREA··35FoR THE JEwS·36FoR PALESTINE·37FoR NoN-CHRISTIANS·38PAGES FOR ADDITIONAL PRAYERS·39ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .·45INDEX·46 4 · ##

FAQs

What is the purpose of this prayer collection for the World-wide Church?

It presents a selection of prayers meant for, and reflecting, the World-wide Church, emphasizing mutual and common intercession across Christians in every land.

Why does the foreword say older missionary prayers have become out-of-date?

It describes a changed situation: older churches are drifting from Christianity and relearning their missionary role, while younger churches are growing to maturity and seeking rightful independence.

How are responses used when praying with a group?

Responses are not inserted after all biddings; for groups that understand silence, a short quiet period should follow each bidding, otherwise responses may be used after Thanks-giving and each Petition.
