This technical document, authored by Professor Miguel Bagajewicz for the Chemical Engineering Design & Safety (CHE 4253) course, provides a comprehensive overview of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs). The material defines the essential components included in P&IDs, such as piping connections, valves, and various instrumentation types like transmitters, controllers, and actuators. It details signal types—including electrical, pneumatic, and data links—and explains how instrument symbols represent installation locations, whether in the field or the control room. Furthermore, the document offers practical design guidance for chemical processes, specifically addressing requirements for control valve spares and pump systems, including necessary bypass, on-off, and check valve configurations. This resource serves as a foundational guide for understanding industrial process documentation and safety design protocols in chemical engineering applications.

FAQs

What are the primary elements that must be depicted in a P&ID?

A P&ID must show all piping that connects equipment, every valve involved in the system, and all associated instrumentation, including measuring devices, transmitters, controllers, and actuators.

How does a P&ID signify the physical installation location of an instrument?

The presence or absence of a line within the instrument symbol indicates its location: a symbol with no line is installed in the field near the process, a solid line indicates installation in the control room, and a dashed line suggests an location not accessible to the operator.

What are the standard signal connection types used in P&IDs?

Standard connection types include process connections, electrical signals, pneumatic signals, data links, capillary tubing for filled systems, hydraulic signal lines, and guided electromagnetic or sonic signals.
