COUNTRY LIFE # Picture Book of THE LAKE DISTRICTIN COLOUIR # PICTURE BOOK OF THE LAKE DISTRICT IN COLOUR The Lake District is scenically one of the mostbeautiful parts of Great Britain and this book triesto do it full justice. The net has been cast as wide aspossible,to include pictures of lesser-known placesas well as famous and familiar beauty spots The lakes themselves are here—Windermere, thelargest in extent;Coniston Water, associated withboth John Ruskin and the speedboats of DonaldCampbell and his father;Ullswater,on the banks ofwhich Wordsworth saw the ‘host of golden daffodils'that inspired his much-quoted poem;Grasmere andRydal Water, both also closely associated with thepoet;Derwentwater, near which Shelley,Coleridge,Southey and Ruskin all spent their honeymoons;Tarn Hows, looking like Switzerland in miniature;the neighbouring Loweswater,Crummock Waterand Buttermere;and lonely little Blea Tarn, againwith Wordsworthian connections. The mountains are here, too—the Langdale Pikes(one picture shows them under snow);Scafell Pike,England's loftiest mountain;Bow Fell;GreatGable, standing up on its own;Skiddaw;Blencathra;and Helvellyn's famous Striding Edge. And,fillingin the gaps between the lakes and the mountains, are the villages and passes (like Hardknott andHonister),the rivers and ghylls, the dales and fellsthat combine to give the Lake District its particularflavour. Each of the forty-five specially chosen pictures hasa long descriptive caption, telling(or reminding)thereader about the place and its associations. And theassociations are almost as interesting as the setting, for they include Tennyson, quoting Morte dArthurin a boat in the middle of Windermere, and rangefrom Hugh Walpole's Judith Paris to BeatrixPotter's Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.
