The synoptic link covers both 9PLO1 (including core ideas) and 9PLO2 (including non-core ideas) | As it is so explicit here – the MS will not let answers get past Level 1 if two countries (the US and UK) are not cited. | | A level 9PLO/3B (Global) | Synopticity is required for Q2 only. FAQs

What is synopticity in the new Edexcel Politics specification?

Synopticity requires candidates to remember and build relevant, explicit links to parts of the course studied previously for specific examination questions. Strict limits are imposed when these links are not made, affecting levels and marks.

Which exam papers and questions require synopticity?

Synopticity is required for specific essays/questions on AS and A level papers (e.g., AS 8PLO2 essays 4a and 4b; A level 9PLO2 essays 4a and 4b; and certain US/global questions). Other papers are marked as not requiring synopticity.

How does missing synoptic content affect the mark awarded?

When synoptic points are not raised, the response cannot reach the highest mark tier (commonly Level 5), and absence can also reduce marks within the level because the synoptic element is integrated into A01 descriptors.
