Isometric overview diagrams are used to synthesize and present complex information in a geographic-atlas-like form, enabling readers to grasp natural resources, population, and historical events analogously to how data network information can be represented in layered isometric views. The paper addresses challenges in information architecture for complex websites and explains how to communicate quantitative and qualitative network analysis through classification hierarchies, navigational options, and the client organization’s impact. A project for INRS shows how the method links website content, departments, technical solutions, and search indexes through a structured mapping process and iterative pattern development.

Given the pattern and shape of a geographic boundary, the reader can understand a variety of information – natural resources, population, historical events – superimposed on the underlying pattern. In the same way, information about complex data networks can be represented in a series of isometric diagrams superimposed on a similar pattern. Websites are o!en a complex agglomeration of many substructures: static and dynamic pages, document databases, and web-based applications. In our information architecture practice, we are engaged by clients to analyze, evaluate and restructure complex websites. "e purpose of this activity may be to add new features, to improve the quality or efficiency of existing features, or to rethink the relationship between the information collection and the intended audience. Communicating the analysis of complex data networks requires the capture of both quantitative and qualitative information. "e structure ofthe information is a subtle relationship between the classification hierarchies used by the client, o!en thought of as tree structures, and navigational options presented by the website. Analysis o!en reveals another important layer: the impact of the client’s organization structure on the data. "e overview diagram must communicate to the entire team a visual synthesis, a pattern that connects what they know about their own information, o!en circumscribed by their task, with the larger view of the entire network. To produce overview diagrams, we o!en use the arrangement of elements on an isometric grid that supports three axes of information, and a range of color and symbol systems. "e technique for representing websites in isometric diagrams is well documented (Kahn et al., 􀀤􀀥􀀥􀀦). "is technique can also be used to present in a series of layers positioned over a repeated structure. By combining an underlying pattern with layers containing variations of details, we are able to combine large amounts of analysis in a visual language that communicates to both a technical and non-technical audience. We illustrate this method by describing a recent project for the Institut national de recherche et de sécurité(INRS), the French agency responsible for worker safety."is paper explains how we used isometric diagrams to present to our intended audience the relationship between the content of the website and contributing departments, technical solutions, and search indexes. 􀀡􀀢􀀨 Paul Kahn & Julia Moisand • Patterns that connect idj 􀀡􀀢 (􀀣), 􀀤􀀥􀀥􀀦, 􀀡􀀢􀀨-􀀡􀀩􀀢 􀀡 . Context We were engaged by the INRS to create a new information architecture for their public website, [www.inrs.fr](www.inrs.fr)."e primary goals for the revisions were: – to organize the site to reach a wider and more diverse audience – to improve information “findability” for this diverse audience. INRS publishes and distributes a large body of literature, including various types of media aimed at different reading levels. "ese publications are already meant fora diverse audience of employees, occupational medicine physicians, and worker safety professionals. However, most of this material is created for print and meant tobe viewed in libraries and the workplace. "e current publications were not well suited for presentation on the computer screen. We had three secondary goals: – to capitalize on the rich document content already produced by the client – to improve the legibility and accessibility of publications on the website – to make the site useful and interesting to the professional medical c

FAQs

How do isometric diagrams help communicate complex data networks?

They translate network structure into an atlas-like visual language, using underlying patterns plus layered variations so both technical and non-technical audiences can understand relationships and details.

What information must be captured to analyze complex websites and networks?

Analysis should capture both quantitative and qualitative information, including classification hierarchies, navigational options, and the impact of the client’s organization structure on the data.

How was the INRS project approached using this method?

The team produced a content inventory, rendered an initial isometric map from tabular data, used it in internal interviews, then evolved the map’s “floor” pattern and overlaid additional variables to connect website content with departments, technical solutions, and search indexes.
