This document provides a comprehensive overview of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), a non-intrusive, whole-field velocity measurement technique used in fluid dynamics. Authored by Dr. Kai Zhang from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, the content details the experimental setup for two-dimensional, two-component (2D-2C) PIV. Key topics include the necessary components of a PIV system—such as seeding particles, illumination sources, cameras, synchronizers, and host computers for image processing—as well as the historical context of flow visualization dating back to early 20th-century water tunnel tests. The text explains the fundamental principles of image correlation, velocity calculation, and the indirect measurement nature of the technique, accompanied by illustrative data examples showing flow field analysis. These lecture materials serve as an academic resource for understanding the principles, hardware requirements, and data interpretation processes critical for conducting modern fluid measurements in engineering research.

FAQs

What are the primary components required for a PIV system?

A PIV system consists of particle tracers to track fluid, an illumination system, a camera for image capture, a synchronizer for timing control, and a host computer for data storage and processing.

What are the main features of the PIV measurement technique?

PIV is characterized by being a non-intrusive, indirect, and whole-field velocity measurement technique.

What is the purpose of seeding particles in PIV?

Seeding particles are added to the flow to act as tracers, allowing the measurement system to track the fluid movement accurately.
