Out on Foot by Rocky Elmore recounts the world of a U.S./Mexico Border Patrol agent through an honest, personal narrative shaped by years of nightly duty and constrained legal disclosure. The introduction frames the border as a harsh parallel universe where routine is incompatible with ordinary public understanding, and highlights misconceptions from politicians who visit briefly yet claim expertise. Across the book’s chapters, patrol experiences are paired with eerie stories, reflective ethics, and station life—from academy and field training to the final watch.

[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) Introduction Dear Reader: At the end of my career, I set out to write a book in order to share with the general public some of my amazing experiences. One of my goals was not to impress my readers, or bore them for that matter, with an “I Love Me”book about endless heroics and law enforcement stories. My intention is not to convince the reader of anything, and I have no particular agenda. I mean simply to share my stories. True, throughout my career I have done my share of those things, as it is quite difficult to serve as a field agent for twenty years on the U.S./Mexico border and not get into a real spot or two. However, for legal reasons I cannot share the majority of those stories. Instead, I wish to give some insight into the world of the Border Patrol agent and demonstrate how vastly different it is from other law enforcement agencies worldwide. Picture it like a very dark version of Alice in Wonderland, if you will, because for ten to twelve hours each day my fellow agents and I stepped into some kind of parallel universe entirely incompatible with the world in which we spent the other twelve. Many people honestly believe they understand the Border Patrol agent’s world, but I can assure you, unless they have been agents, they do not. There is no real understanding of that world without plunging deeply into it on a full-time basis; and I am not talking about going on a three-or fourhour border tour that some politicians brag about, either. Politicians love to fly over the border in a helicopter or take a drive along the fence in a convoy of vehicles for protection and then proudly proclaim,“I’ve been down in the trenches with those guys, and I know what it’s like down there.” Truth is, they have been nowhere near the real action, and they know nothing about what it is truly like down there. To those of us who know, their “experiences” are completely laughable. My main goal with this book is to break ground, so to speak, and open anew door. To my knowledge, few, if any, law enforcement books offer true

FAQs

What is the book’s purpose according to the introduction?

Elmore aims to share experiences and provide insight into the border patrol agent’s world, while avoiding an agenda or endless heroics. He also wants to open “a new door” for readers to understand that environment more accurately.

Why does the author say most stories cannot be fully shared?

For legal reasons, he states he cannot share the majority of certain experiences. The narrative therefore focuses on insight rather than complete disclosure.

What does the author claim about politicians’ understanding of border patrol work?

He argues that politicians’ helicopter flights and short fence-side visits are far from the real action. Their “experiences” are described as laughable to those who have served full-time.
